RAIL SWACHHATHA PROGRAMME

The Cleanliness Drive Programme known as Rail-Swachatha is joint venture of National Service Scheme and the Trivandrum Division of Indian Railways. The State-Level inauguration of NSS Rail-Swachatha programme was held on 4th June 2004 at Central Railway Station, Trivandrum at 3.30 pm. A meeting for that purpose was conducted by the ADRM with NSS Assistant Programme Adviser, State Liaison Officer, Programme Co-ordinator and other Railway Officials on 25.5.2004 at 11 am in the Divisional Railway manager’s office. The meeting decided to conduct the cleaning work at 23 stations from Neyyattinkara to Wadakkanchery.

Smt. Sujatha Jayaraj, ADRM inaugurated the cleaning campaign by waving the green flag. Soon after nearly hundred volunteers participated in the cleaning of the coaches of Vanchinad Express. As the ADRM pointed out the cleaning awareness programme was an attempt to change not just the physical conditions but the attitudes of the people as well.

As per the schedule prescribed by the Railway in consultation with the NSS functionaries the dates assigned to Vocational Higher Secondary Department were June 12, & 19; July17, 24 & 31; August 7, September 25 and November 6. Nearly 50 NSS Units of VHS School actively participated in the programme by utilizing the service of about 2500 volunteers.

Besides the planned programme Railway designed a new awareness programme at selected Railway gates on 1st September 2004. In Varkala, the NSS unit of Karavaram VHSS executed the programme. In Pullepady the volunteers of MMO VHSS Panayappally and SRV VHSS Eranakulam conducted the work successfully. The NSS volunteers and Railway Officials gave counseling to the drivers and passengers about the precautions to be followed while crossing the Railway gate.

The unit level programme was launched on 12th June 2004. The NSS Cell of the Directorate of VHSE assigned the NSS Units of VHS Schools to execute the programme in a befitting manner after consulting the stationmaster and other officials of the respective stations.

Neyyattinkara

GVHSS Paraniyam

A team of 26 students and NSS Programme Officer Shri. S. Y Sovereign successfully conducted NSS Rail Swachatha Programme at Neyyattinkara Railway Station on 6th November 2004. The cleaning program was inaugurated by Shri. Gopakumar, Station Master at 9.30 am. The team cleaned the premises of the station and distributed notices having cleaning slogans among the passengers of Trivandrum-Nagarcoil Passenger, Mumbai –Kannyakumari Express & Ananthapuri Express. They displayed banners & placards in the Station during the programme.


GVHSS, Kulathoor

As a part of the Regular Activities of NSS unit, the volunteers of GVHSS Kulathur cleaned Neyyattinkara Railway Station on 21/8/2004. Volunteers along with the Programme Officer reached the Station at 10 am. Shri. Gopakumar, Station Master of the Neyyattinkara Station inaugurated the programme. Principal Shri. N Narayanan Nair, staff secretary Shri. Radhakrishnan Nair, Shri. Mohanan Nair Programme Officer and other staff Smt. Beena, Smt. Smitha, Shri. Praveen of GV & HSS, Kulathoor participated in the programme. Necessary implements were brought by the Volunteers. The Volunteers cleaned about 150 metter of platform. They finished the work by 3.30 pm. It was a good experience for the teachers and volunteers. The stationmaster appreciated the volunteers and teachers.

Trivandrum

Haji CHMKM VHSS, Vallakkadavu and Govt. Girls VHSS, Manacaud


The cleaning Drive at Trivandrum Central Railway Station was inaugurated by Shri. P.D John, Railway Station Manger on 12th June 2004. 50 volunteers of Haji CHMKM VHSS, Vallakkadavu and Govt. Girls VHSS, Manacaud cleaned the premises of II Terminal, which includes garden in front of the station.



Govt. VHS School, Vattiyoorkavu

The NSS unit of Govt. VHS School, Vattiyoorkavu participated in the Rail Swachatha Programme on 25.9.2004. 25 NSS volunteers under the leadership of the NSS Programme Officer, Shri. L. Sudarsanan, reached at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station on 25.9.2004. Shri. M. T Cherian Station Master (Commercial), addressed the volunteers at the VIP Lounge Hall of the Station at 10.30 am. He effectively interacted with the NSS volunteers about various hazards in relation to Railway Journey. After delivering certain vital points among the objectives and aims of the year long ‘Rail Swachatha’ Programme. Shri. Chandramohanan.S, Deputy Station Master (Commercial), has also addressed the students and gave necessary guidance for the ‘Rail Swachatha’ Progamme. After the refreshments, the students started the cleaning activities.

The NSS volunteers cleaned the Railway Station premises including the platforms with the instruments provided by the Railways. Certain coaches of the ‘Madras Mail’which arrived at that time were also cleaned by the volunteers using the water hoses. clothes and cotton. Certain posters speaking the essentiality of observing cleanliness were displayed in the Railway station premises.

The team left the station after receiving words of thanks from the Railway authorities including Shri. M. T Cherian (S.M) and Shri. Chandramohan(Dy. S.M) by 2.30 pm.

Haji CHMKM VHSS, Vallakkadavu

As part of Rail-swachatha programme in the second phase, Haji CHMKM VHSS, Vallakkadavu and Victory VHSS Nemon jointly conducted a one day cleaning-cum-beautification programme at the second entrance of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway station (power house road) on 6th November 2004. This programme was inaugurated by the station Manager. In his inaugural talk he stressed the need of swachatha to all those traveling in the train including the student community. The other speakers in the programme were Shri. Mohanachandran Assistant Station Manager, Shri. Latheef, Health Inspector, Shri. Noorudeen M. NSS Programme Officer, Shri. Alex, NSS Programme Officer, Shri. Sasikumar, NSS Programme Officer expressed vote of thanks. The inauguration was followed by the garden beautification and cleaning the premises of the second entrance of the Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Railway Station. This one day swachatha programme was led by Shri. Sasikumar (NSS Programme Officer), Shri. Noorudeen.M, NSS Programme Officer, VHSS, Vallakkadavu and Shri. Alex, NSS Programme Officer, Nemom.

Kollam

KPSPM VHSS East Kallada

On June 12th 2004, the NSS units of KPSPM VHSS East Kallada and VV VHSS Ayathil jointly conducted the NSS Rail Swachatha programme at Kollam Railway Station. Nearly 50 volunteer, of both the Schools cleaned the station premises especially the platform, bathrooms etc. They distributed printed cards and notices among the passengers and the public. The volunteers gave orientation to the Railway porters, taxi drivers, passengers etc about the need of keeping the train and station clean.

Sri. Ajith, Station Manager, Sri. Jacob Thomas, Assistant Station Manger & Shri. Shihar, Health Inspector, actively co-operated with Shri Ramji K Karan NSS Programme Officer, KPSPM VHS School, and Prassannan Pillai, NSS Programme Officer, VV VHSS for the successful implementation of the programme.

Asianet Cable Vision covered the programme and telecasted on the same day and all the dailies reported the news on 13th June 2004. The Railway staff; passengers and the public appreciated the volunteers for their commitment for a public cause.


St. Michael’s VHSS, Kumbalam

As per the direction of the NSS Cell, DVHSE 30 NSS Volunteers and two teachers of St. Michael’s VHSS, Kumbalam actively participated in the NSS Rail Swachatha Programme at Kollam Railway Station on 17th July 2004. The Station Manager deputed Shri. Jacob Thomas, Assistant Station Manager and Shri. Shihar Jamaludheen, Chief Health Inspector for leading the volunteers. They cleaned the Railway Station premises especially washed platform No. 4 & Ticket Counter & Coach. The Railway Staff were very much satisfied in the work, co-operation and dedication of the volunteers. The General public also congratulated them.


SKV VHSS, Thrikkannamangal

The NSS Unit of SKV VHSS, Thrikkannamangal, Kottarakkara also participated in the NSS Rail Swachatha Programme. As per the schedule, 25 volunteers under the leadership of Shri. J. P Jayan, NSS Programme Officer reached at the Kollam Railway Station at 8 am on 7th August 2004 after a journey of 30 kms from the school. They were welcomed by the Railway authorities including the station Manager Shri. Ajith Kumar. With their assistance, volunteers cleaned washbasins, toilets, platform and clock room etc. They exhibited placards related to cleanliness. Shri. A.K Mohammed Usman Sait, VHSE Examination Secretary visited the spot and encouraged the volunteers.


Vellimon VHSS

As per the instruction of the NSS Cell, the NSS unit of VHSS, Vellimon Kollam successfully conducted the Rail Swachatha Programme at Kollam Railway Station on 6th November 2004. The programme was inaugurated by Shri. M Ajith, Station Manager. Shri. Jacob Thomas, Deputy Station Manger, Shri Jalaludheen Chief Health Inspector, Shri. V Sankaranarayan Pillai Ex. MLA; Adv. Sanal Kumar, Notary, Kollam etc felicitated on the occasion. Shri. Zachariah Mathew NSS Pgoramme Officer extended vote of thanks.


St. George VHS School, Chowalloor

As per the direction from the Directorate of VHSE, the NSS unit of St. George VHSS decided to conduct a cleaning programme in Kollam Railway station premises on 1/10/2004. 44 NSS volunteers along with Programme Officer, PTA President Shri. G. Viswanathapillai and other staff went to Railway Station and reached that around 7.25 am. After the NSS choir the volunteers entered the Railway station in two lines with the banner.

At 8.15 am the special train arrived the Railway station with NSS co-ordinator of VHSE, NSS State Liaison Officer and all other VIPs from the NSS Cell and Railways. The NSS volunteers received them with the NSS choir. NSS volunteers were addressed by the VIPs and got the opportunity to take photographs with them. Asianet cable vision covered the programme. The train departured after two minute of halt.

After that, programme officer contacted the railway canteen authorities for providing break fast to volunteers on concession rates. Canteen authorities co-operated with them and provided break fast on concession rates. After breakfast and leisure from 9 am to 10.30 am (11/2 hours) a cleaning program was conducted in the railway station premises. The railway authorities co-operated by providing refreshment.

The programme was a newel experience to volunteers and was golden opportunity for creating a good image to the school among the public. Many passengers discussed with the volunteers about NSS, the swachatha programme and the school. The programme enabled the volunteers to create a social awareness among the public. That can be considered as the general result of the programme.

CNPPM VHSS, Kattachira

On 26th January 2005 (Republic Day) the NSS units of Captain NP Pillai Memorial VHSS, Kattachira cleaned the premises of Ochira Railway Station At 10 am. Advocate Rajanbabu MLA inaugurated the service in the presence of Smt. Lalitha Sivarajan, Ochira Gram Pancjayath President Shri. K Sankaran, Block member and Smt. K.S Ushakumary etc.

Chengannur
TKMRM VHSS Vallana

As part of the Rail Swachatha programme organized by the NSS Cell, Department of VHSE in association with the Trivandrum Division of the Southern Railway, a programme was conducted by the unit at Chengannur Railway Station on 1st October 2004. The Railway station is situated about 10 kilometers away from the school. It is one of the most important Railway Station in the Division. Thousands of passengers alights and Boards from this station daily and is the Railway entrance to the Alappuzha District in Trivandrum Kottayam line.

As per the instructions issued by the Programme Co-ordinator, NSS cell Department of VHSE Trivandrum, the programme Officer requested the Railway Station Superintendent for the necessary permission to conduct a cleanliness awareness campaign at Chengannur Railway Station. He permitted to do the same on 1st October 2004.

Fifty selected volunteers Programme Officer and seven teachers took part in this programme. They arrived at the station at 11 am in a mini bus. The banners regarding the Swachatha Programme were displayed in front and back of the bus. A banner was also displayed in front of the Railway station with the message “ Keep the Railways Clean and Neat” and the Rail Swachatha Programme. The programme was started at 11.15. by singing the NSS song in choir. The Programme Officer presided over the function. Jomon T George, student volunteer welcomed the gathering. Railway station superintendent Mr. K. C Mohanan inaugurated the function. In his speech he pointed out the need of keeping the railway station premises clean and neat. He also pointed out the interest shown by the NSS volunteers in conducting such a programme in the railway station. Mr. Vijayakumar P. S and Rajeev K. N gave felicitations to the programme. Kum. Revathy Mohan gave vote of Thanks.

The Programme started with cleaning platform No.1. The volunteers cleaned the station premises. Railway authorizes also helped them in the cleaning programme. The Railway authorities served tea and snacks to the volunteers as an inspiration.

The special train carrying the Divisional Railway Manger and the Mavelikkara parliamentary constituency M.P Smt. C S Sujatha, arrived at the station at 2 pm. Shri.P.Alassankutty, the State Liaison Officer, NSS, Dr. L Thulaseedharan, Programme Co-ordinator, NSS, Directorate of Vocational Higher Secondary Education accompanied the Divisional Railway Manger. The Programme Officer shri. M Sunil Kumar P welcomed the guests by giving them bouquets. The M.P Smt. C.S Sujatha appreciated the NSS volunteers in their participation and the endeavour. The Divisional Manger praised the student volunteers in doing such a good work. The important personalities from different phases of social circles participated in this programme and they also praised the NSS volunteers and remarked the initiatives of the NSS cell in conducting socially useful programmes.

Mavelikkara
Naduvattom VHS School, Pallipad

On 4th September 2004 Shri. Ramesh Kumar, NSS Programme Officer, Naduvattom VHS School, Pallipad and his 70 volunteers along with 7 staff of the school actively participated in the NSS Rail Swachatha and Reception to DRM ADRM, Railway Officials and NSS functionaries especially Prof. P Alassankutty and Dr. L Thulaseedharan at Mavelikkara Railway Station. With the permission of the stationmaster, the volunteers cleaned the station. It was a memorable experience to the students.

Ernakulam

MMO VHSS, Panayappally, KPM VHS School, Poothotta

The NSS volunteers of three schools of Eranakulam District conducted the NSS Rail Swachatha Programme in Eranakulam Junction on 12th June 2004. Kozhikode Mayor Shri. C.M Dinesh Mani inaugurated the programme. Station manager; Shri. George John, NSS TOC Co-ordinator Prof. P.K Mohammed etc were present on the occasion. About 75 volunteers under the leadership of Shri. Fazil E, NSS Programme Officer, MMO VHS School, Panayappally; Shri.P Baiju, NSS Programme Officer, KPM VHS School, Poothotta and Shri. Habeebulla, NSS Programme Officer, DU VHSS, Pulleppady cleaned the station premises. ACV telecasted the and the cleaning programme. English & Malayalam News papers gave good coverage.

SRV VHSS, MMO VHSS, Panayappilly

Railway safety Awareness Programme

A Railway Safety Awareness Programme was conducted on 1st September 2004 at Pullepady Railway Gate was a great success. A total of twenty volunteers from MMO VHSS Panayappally and SRV VHSS Eranakulam joined hand in hand with the Railway Employees for giving safety Awareness to the public. More than 100 drivers and passengers were counseled in the programme. It was inaugurated by Shri. Mathew George, Area Manager, Eranakulam followed by Safety Awareness class to volunteers made by Shri. Gopakumar, Railway Circle Inspector. After that the NSS volunteers and Railway officers conducted counseling to the drivers and passengers about the precautions to be followed while crossing the Railway Gate. Other distinguished guests on the occasion were Prof. P. K Mohammed, Co-ordinator, NSS Training and Orientation Centre, Rajagiri. College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery. Shi. George John, Railway Station Manger, Shri. Baiju, NSS Programme Officer, KPM VHSS, Poothotta, Shri. Said Muhammed, NSS Programme Officer VHSS, Irumbanam, Shri. Tomy Paul NSS Pgoramme Officer, SRV VHSS Eranakulam and Shri. E Fazil, NSS Programme Officer, MMO VHSS Panayappilly. It was a highly remarkable achievement in the history of NSS. It has provided a new experience to the volunteers. The Railway authorities extended full co-operation to the NSS people.

Eranakulam North

As part of the NSS Rail Swachatha programme, the NSS volunteers of VHSS Irumpanam in co-operation with SRV Eranakulam, conducted a cleaning and awareness programme at Eranakulam North Railway Station on 17th July 2003. The function was inaugurated by Shri. K Babu MLA in the presence of Shri. Babu. K. Iharah, Principal VHSS Irumpanam and Railway Station authorities. Fifty volunteers from both the schools participated

Thrissur
VHSS, Karalam, Islamic VHSS, Orumanayoor

The commercial Deputy Manager inaugurated the NSS Rail Swachatha Programme in Trichur Railway Station on 12th June 2004. Bhaskaran Tharamel; Shri. Johnson PV NSS PO, VHSS Karalam, Shri. Satheesh Kumar, NSS PO, Islamic VHSS, Orumanayoor and Shri. M.K Dharmapalan, NSS PO, SN VHSS, Aloor took leading role by participating 50 volunteers for the successful conduct of the programme. They cleaned the station premises and areas of the Railway track Shri. T.K Muraleedharan, Traffic Inspector, Shri. Kesava Panicker, Acting Station Superintendent, Shri. P.K Krishna Kumar. Health Inspector, Shri. Jithendraprasad etc. gave proper direction and assistance to the volunteers. The press cuttings and photographs itself shows excellent performance of the NSS Volunteers at Thrissur Rail Way Station. The Station Superintendent issued a appreciation letter to the organizers of the programme.

Irinjalakkuda
RM VHSS, Perinjanam

The NSS volunteers of RM VHSS, Perinjanam under the leadership of the Programme Officer Shri. Dinil Kumar M.B conducted the NSS Rail Swachatha Programme in the Irinjalakkuda Railway Station on 19th June 2004 and 24th July 2004. About 15 volunteers from GVHSS for Boys Inrinjalakkuda were also associated in the programme. It was inaugurated by Shri. Jayakumar, Irinjalakkuda Railway Station Master. Shri. Joseph N Ninan, Superintendent of the station advised them to conduct awareness programme along with Manual work.


Thrissur
RM VHSS, Perinjanam & GFVHSS, Kaipamangalam

A total number of 50 volunteers from GFVHSS, Kaipamangalam and RM VHSS Perinjanam organized the Cleanliness Awareness Programme at Thrissur Railway Station on 24th July 2004. They counseled the passengers about the need of keeping the station & train clean. Volunteers approached the public displaying placards. Shri. G Baburaj, DIG of Police and Miss Jotsna, Film Singer appreciated the volunteers for taking up the venture. The Railway authorities were very much happy and expressed gratitude to the volunteers for their commitment to make the programme a success.

Thrissur
GVHSS, Irinjalakkuda

On 6th November 2004, thirty three volunteers of Govt. VHSS Irinjalakkuda conducted Rail Swachatha Programme at Trissur Railway Station. The Superintendent of Thrissur Railway Station inaugurated the programme. The students were divided into 11 groups of three each and they counseled the public and passengers, holding placards, instructing them to keep the Railway Station premises & train clean and neat, The Station superintendent distributed prizes to the top three teams for counseling maximum number of people. The topmost team counseled 152 nos. of persons. It was a very successful endeavor. Many complaints and suggestions were collected from the passengers and submitted to the Superintendent.



Wadakanchery
TM VHSS Peimpilavu

Shri. A. C Moideen MLA inaugurated the Swathacha Programme at Wadakknchery Railway Station organized by NSS Unit of TM VHSS Perimpilavu on November 6th 2004. About 30 volunteers and 5 teachers participated in the programme. The Station Master arranged tea and snacks to the volunteers. After the cleaning work at the Railway Station they visited Kerala Kala Mandalam at Cheruthuruthy.

Wadakkanchery
GVHSS, Pazhanji

The NSS unit of GVHSS, Pazhanji has actively participated in the Rail Swachatha programme at Wadakkanchery Railway Station on 24th July 2004. The works allotted to the male volunteers were cleaning the link road connecting the Railway Station and the Thrissur Wadakkanchery Road. The female volunteers cleaned the plat form simultaneously.

Sarvodayam VHSS, Aryampadam

Under the direction of the directorate of VHSE NSS, the NSS unit of Sarvodayam VHSS undertook a cleanliness programme at the Wadakkanchery Railway Station on 17th July Saturday 2004. An awareness class on clean and healthy society was also conducted. The cleaning up programme was done under the leadership of NSS Programme Officer Joshy Paul and the Railway station master Shri. Sasi. Youth for cleanliness and NSS railway cleaning were given wide media coverage. The NSS motto “Not me But You” was meant to be understood by the public in all its depth.

Guruvayoor
TM VHS School, Perumpilavu; Islamic VHS School, Orumanayoor

The NSS units of Sarvaodayam VHSS undertook a cleanliness programme of the Guruvayoor Railway station of 17th January 2005. The Railway authorities of Kerala and the NSS Programme Co-ordinator, Dr. L Thulaseedharan gave valuable talks on Swachatha. All most the NSS units of Thrissur district participated in the meeting organised by Railways at more than 100 volunteers from VHS Schools participated in the programme. It was a success in highlighting the commitment of NSS especially the activities of NSS Cell, DVHSE.
